Becoming Our Best

PREVENTING HOLIDAY STRESS

The end of the year is full of many activities that can produce stress. Attending Christmas parties, over-eating, sending cards, doing year-end reports, traveling, and many others. You know them as well as I. And most of us just get more and more tightly wound up until early in the New Year, when we breathe a huge sigh of relief. Is there anything that can be done to make this season a little easier for us?

My creative side says that perhaps it would be helpful to delay a few things. And possibly the results would be better. Here are a few items that might be postponed:

• Christmas greeting cards. The ones that arrive late in our household tend to get read more closely.

• Parties. Many can be held in early January or even February when people may be able to enjoy them more fully.

• Gift-giving. Those that are received after the deluge of presents exchanged at Christmas are more likely to be noticed and appreciated.

• Year-end reports. Possibly some could be compiled in January and produce more accurate and usable data than those done in the year-end crunch.

Think about it. Review your “to-do” list and see what has to be done now and what may be delayed. Move your ego to the side, look clearly at the list and I am sure that a few key items will emerge for you.

Extra stress is not helpful at this time of year. Take a few moments and reflect on the meaning of the season, try for a peaceful state of mind and just do the things that really need to be done in a graceful manner. Your family, friends and team members will be glad you did.
